Drive in
Thailand

Left-side traffic, dense motorcycle flow and fast-changing road conditions reward calm, predictable driving.

The short version

Know these before moving

Five minutes here can prevent an expensive—and unsafe—mistake later.

01

Keep left

Traffic travels on the left. Overtake with care and follow lane arrows and posted signs at junctions.

02

Carry a valid licence

Visitors should carry a valid Thai licence, qualifying ASEAN licence or recognised International Driving Permit for the correct vehicle class.

03

Buckle up

Use seat belts in the vehicle. Never assume a short local trip makes restraints optional.

04

Helmet, every ride

Riders and passengers should use a properly fastened, certified helmet—even for short scooter journeys.

05

Never drink and drive

Enforcement and limits vary by driver category. The safest practical rule is zero alcohol before driving.

06

Posted signs win

Speed, turn and parking restrictions depend on the road. Follow the sign in front of you.

On the road

Read the street,
not just the map.

Expect mixed traffic, quick lane changes and road users travelling at very different speeds.

↔

Motorcycles fill the gaps

Check mirrors and blind spots before every lane change or turn. Signal early and move gradually.

◇

Crossings need attention

Slow down early and yield to pedestrians. Never assume another vehicle will stop beside you.

☂

Weather changes grip

Tropical rain reduces visibility and makes painted lines, metal covers and sand especially slippery.

↱

Red-light turns are sign-led

Do not assume a turn is permitted. Obey the signal and any local sign at the intersection.

Pre-drive checklist

Ready to turn the key?

Do not rely on the rental counter alone. The driver remains responsible for valid documents and a roadworthy vehicle.

  • Passport and valid licence or recognised IDP
  • Correct motorcycle or car category on the licence
  • Rental agreement and valid insurance documents
  • Tyres, brakes, lights, mirrors and indicators checked
  • Certified helmets for rider and passenger
  • Offline route and emergency contacts saved
Common questions

Before you rent

Can I drive with only my home-country licence?+

Do not assume so. Thailand recognises specific arrangements, including qualifying ASEAN licences and recognised International Driving Permits. Confirm your exact documents and vehicle category.

Does a rental shop guarantee I am legal to drive?+

No. A shop may rent a vehicle without verifying every legal or insurance requirement. The driver remains responsible.

Can I bring a foreign-registered vehicle?+

Thailand has a separate Foreign Vehicle Permit process with eligibility, advance application and document requirements. Use the Department of Land Transport portal.
